Tōkyō

Sensō-ji (浅草寺, Asakusa Kannon Temple) is the oldest temple in Tokyo, founded in 628 AD.
- According to legend, it was built after two fishermen pulled a statue of Kannon (the Goddess of Mercy) from the Sumida River.
- The approach to the temple, Nakamise-dōri, is a 250-meter stretch of stalls selling traditional snacks, souvenirs, and local crafts. It’s been a market since the Edo period — originally run by locals serving pilgrims.
- The Kaminarimon (“Thunder Gate”) features a huge paper lantern nearly 4 meters tall and weighing around 700 kg.
