Tōkyō
The East Gardens (皇居東御苑) occupy the area of the former Edo Castle, which was the seat of power for over 260 years during the Tokugawa shogunate.
- You can walk through preserved samurai guardhouses, like the Fujimi-yagura (Mt. Fuji View Tower) - one of the few original buildings left from the Edo era.
- The original garden dates to the early 1600s during Tokugawa Iemitsu’s reign. The current design is based on historic documents and maps and was restored to its Edo-period layout in 1968.
